ABOUT MONEMVASIA

Monemvasia is a uniquely preserved medieval town that is carved into the majestic grey rock like a sculpture. By land, there is only one way in, via a causeway, as the origin of its name (one entrance) implies. The “Gibraltar of the East” or a “stone ship” about to set sail, as the famous Greek poet Yannis Ritsos described his birthplace, beckons you for a journey through time, wandering through vaulted alleyways and past churches and aristocratic mansions.Take a swim in its crystal-clear waters and sample its delicious cuisine and legendary wine. Following in the footsteps of knights, pirates, crusaders and emperors, who all fell under the spell of this mythical place in the Peloponnese, time will stand still and you become one with history.

HOW TO GET THERE

FLIGHTS TO ATHENS AIRPORT

There is no airport in Monemvasia. The most convenient airport is the <a href="https://aia.gr/traveler/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">International Airport of Athens</a> that receives flights from all Greek islands and from abroad.

DRIVING DIRECTIONS FROM ATH AIRPORT TO KINSTERNA HOTEL

The driving from Athens International Airport to Monemvasia lasts approximately 3,5 hours, while the additions of new roadways ensure a comfortable and safer journey.Follow the ‘Attiki Odos’ (Αττική Οδός) highway from the Airport towards ‘Elefsina’ (Ελευσίνα).Once you exit ‘Attiki Odos’ you follow the road towards ‘Korinthos’ (Κόρινθος), ‘Tripoli’ (Τρίπολη) and ‘Kalamata’ (Καλαµάτα). Continue straight at the National Road of ‘Tripoli’, following the direction to ‘Kalamata’ and do not turn right to the exit of ‘Tripoli’.Continue straight and after the town of ‘Megalopolis’ (Μεγαλόπολη), turn right at the exit towards ‘Sparta’ (Σπάρτη) to enter the new road ‘Lefktro – Sparta’, 46 km length. At the end of the new road, you will see the sign ‘Geraki straight-Sparta right’ and continue straight towards ‘Geraki’.Shortly before entering the new regional road of Sparta, you meet a roundabout and follow the direction to ‘Geraki’ (Γεράκι) and ‘Geraki - Gytheio’ (Γεράκι-Γύθειο). Continue straight, following the sign ‘Neapoli – Monemvasia – Molaoi - Skala’ (Νεάπολη – Μονεµβασιά – Μολάοι - Σκάλα). The end of the new road has been interlinked with the national road ‘Sparta - Gytheio’, shortly after the military camp KEEM where you take left towards ‘Monemvasia’. When you arrive at the city of Monemvasia, you should turn right at the sign towards ‘Neapoli – Koulentia – Lira - Nomia’. Following the coastal road for a distance of almost 6km.You keep driving along the coastline and take a left when you come to the fork in the road following the sign ‘Agios Stefanos – Xifias - Agios Fokas’ and do not turn right towards ‘Neapoli – Koulentia – Lira - Nomia’.Continue on the coastal road and pass the sign ‘Ampelakia Beach’. Shortly after Ampelakia beach (about 500m) you reach a small bridge. Right after, there is a road that turns right, following the sign of the hotel and the municipal sign towards ‘Agios Stefanos’. Turn right and now follow the hotel signs for approximately one kilometer yet. The discreet grey signs with the hotel name feature directional arrows and distances.

Castle Town of Monemvasia

The Castle Town of Monemvasia is among the most impressive places in Greece. Located on the southeastern side of Peloponnese, Monemvasia Greece was entirely carved on the backside of a sea rock in Medieval times. This huge sea rock is not visible from the mainland so that the locals could avoid enemy attacks. The only way to reach Monemvasia was by boat, while later on a paved pathway was constructed to connect the castle entrance to the mainland. This is how the name came out, meaning a single passage. A new town has been constructed in the mainland, just opposite the rock. A walk around the Castle Town is a travel to the past, while the sea view from the castle top is breathtaking.

The upper town

The Upper Town was home to the Venetian aristocracy and although it's a steep climb to reach the beautiful mansions (in the 17th century tavellers once counted 500), you'll be rewarded with panoramic views of the the whole area. The half-Byzantine, half-Venetian church of Agia Sophia clings to the side of the cliff and is one of the most significant attractions in Monemvasia. Once inside, you'll be awe-stuck by its magnificent octagonal dome.

Travel to Byzantium

History comes to life in this castle: Twenty-four temples and churches with Byzantine elements remain from the 40 that once existed. The oldest is Elkomenos Christos, located in the main square of the Lower Town. Other churches worth seeing are Panagia Chrysafitissa, Agios Nikolaos and Panagia tin Kritikia (Myrtidiotissa).

Cave of Kastania

Visitors are captivated by the guided tour of the cave of Kastania, which is considered only the second of its kind in Europe and dates back to the Jurassic period. The incredible stalagmites and impressive shapes are a feast for the eyes in this 1,500 square metre cave. Kastania caves is around 1 hour from Monemvasia.

Cave of Diros

A tour of the spectacular cave complex of Diros in the Peloponnese offers visitors the opportunity to travel back to the Neolithic era and even further. The beautiful and dramatic formations of stalactites and stalagmites, formed millions of years ago, when the sea, located just a few meters away, started to rise and formed the lake we see today. After viewing the tour, take a swim at the nearby beach and enjoy the day. We recommend stopping in the town Gythio for dinner on the way back too.

Pori Beach

Located only a couple of km away from Monemvasia town, Pori is a well organized beach with sun beds, deck chairs and umbrellas. Although the village nearby still keeps the ancient vibe and still has an unspoiled environment, there is a variety of features to make the tourists life pretty easy, such as a supermarket, car rental agencies, and a broad offer of restaurants, bars and taverns serving delicious fish based dishes and other typical delicacies. Pori Beach has a lot to offer. It is more than a simple beach. It is a tour spot in its own right, offering the perfect mix of an ancient vibe and the most modern facilities for tourists.

Ambelakia Beach

Ambelakia is a popular beach for its fine sand, striking geological features and unique view of the Monemvasia fortress. On the coast of Nomia, south of Monemvasia, it is ideal for those looking for a beach with amenities, including sunbeds, umbrellas and a mobile canteen. It is suitable for games such as beach volleyball and rackets.Right next to the beach are restaurants and hotels.

Xifias Beach

The long beautiful beach of Xifias is located 7 km south west of Monemvasia Town. It is close to the villages of Agia Paraskevi, Nomia, and Agios Stefanos. All of them gifted with some nice beaches which are a nice option for swimming.

Plitra Beach

Plitra is a hidden gem just a 40 minute drive west of Monemvasia. This beach has crystal clear waters, beds with umbrellas, and food services.

Elafonisos Island

Elafonisos is a beautiful island with exotic beaches considered among the best in the Mediterranean. We recommend going to Simos Beach once on the island. The white sand and turquoise water captivate visitors. The port to Elafonisos is about 40 minutes away from Monemvasia by car and the island is accessible by a short ferry ride. You can drive your vehicle onto the ferry and have it with you on the island. If you go to Elafonisos, we'd recommend getting there in the morning to utilize the whole day because it is simply breathtaking.
